Getting started - playing those old C64 games again

Playing C64 games again
This page explains how you can play C64 games again and so relive the old C64 memory. There are basically three ways to play the Commodore 64 games again:
1. Re-install your old C64
2. Emulate the Commodore 64 on another computer platform (for example your PC)
3. Get a C64 Direct-to-TV

Ad. 1 Re-install your old C64
Of course, the best way to play the old C64 games is to re-install your old C64. You require a Commodore 64 or 128 with the relevant pheripherals. Watch Ebay for auctions on these machines. Furthermore, the following option is available if you don't want to connect your C64 to the COAX connector: a scart cable for your C64! It's provided by Jonathan Haward on the following site: http://freespace.virgin.net/asteroid.76/scartcables/.

But most of us don't want to buy a C64 again, or prefer to play C64 games on their current computer system.

Ad. 2 Emulate the Commodore 64 on another computer platform (for example your PC)
If you want to play (or better: emulate) C64 games, regardless of your computer system, you need three items:
- a working computer system (i.e. a PC, an Amiga or an Apple) complete with operating system (i.e. Amiga OS, Linux or Windows)
- a C64 emulator: this is software enabeling you to let your computer act as a C64
- C64 software (for example the games you want to play)

A C64 emulator is a piece of software that makes your computer system act like a Commodore 64. If you run an emulator on your system, your system can run original C64 software. The emulator you need depends on the system you have. We will advise on two emulators below.

A lot of original C64 software, especially games, can be found on the internet. For example, the 50 best games ever can be downloaded from our Alltime C64 Games Top 50. If you want to download games, go here.

Where can I obtain an emulator for my system?
1. On our website for PC and Amiga.
2. For other type of systems, try Frodo or select one from Cocos.

I just cannot get the emulator or the games to work! What to do?
The first thing you could do is read the FAQ's of the websites which created the emulator. If that doesn't solve your problem, go to our forum. Some good threats to read are:

Ad. 3 Get a C64 Direct-to-TV
The third option is to buy a 'C64 Direct-to-TV'; which is basically a joystick with 30 C64 games build in it. The joystick can be plugged in your TV and there you go! I tried it myself, it works but I am not 'over the moon' from this product. You cannot buy it from commodoreworld.com anymore, but it is generally offered for sale on the internet.
